Design Team Lead | Senior Graphic Designer
Automatit
I joined Automatit as the next step in my design journey. They were a custom website & marketing business for the self storage industry. The Creative Director took a chance on me, a designer with limited web experience, because he could see the potential I had. Happy to say, his hunch was correct. I quickly grew into a leadership role, eventually overseeing the design team while managing custom website projects from concept to launch. Under the mentorship of the Creative Director, I gained a comprehensive understanding of user-focused web design and later took the lead on client communications, team training, and process improvements. As he took on the additional role of Marketing Director, he left me in charge of running the design team as their Design Team Lead/Senior Designer.
Creative Leadership Rooted in Teamwork
As our team scaled, I created internal systems from Trello/ClickUp workflows, InVision mock-ups for both client review and development reference, handoff procedures to copy, and asset documentation. This all ensured smooth collaboration between designers, developers, marketers, and of course, our clients. I was responsible for onboarding and mentoring junior designers, giving constructive feedback, and helping each team member grow by recognizing their strengths and supporting areas of improvement. I also worked directly with clients to understand their goals, guide discovery calls, and tailor design solutions based on industry research and their brand needs. This even helped launch a successful add-on design service that included logos, branding, and collateral. I collaborated cross-functionally to estimate timelines, prepare developers for handoff, and help troubleshoot challenges. Whether that meant refining design choices or smoothing over client concerns, I handled each task with clarity and professionalism.
During my time at Automatit, I helped foster a collaborative, growth-driven culture between the design and development teams. I encouraged open knowledge-sharing. Our designers would spend time learning best web practices with our devs. Our developers picked up on improving layouts and even inspired them to be creative in things like little animations on how a drop-down menu appears. This helped create space for experimentation while respecting technical limitations from both teams. I also supported scalable solutions by introducing template-based site designs for clients with smaller budgets or faster timelines, repurposing unused concepts into efficient, streamlined offerings. My work and team-centered mindset were recognized early on, earning me a company core values award for Teamwork in my first year alongside my developer friend, and I’m proud to say every designer I mentored went on to be recognized and awarded as well.
